If you’re looking for an amazing place to take pictures in California, look no further.  The Pismo Beach Sand Dunes (Oceano Dunes) are located just south of Pismo Beach in Southern California.  The dunes extend for miles making it the perfect place for photography.  Pismo Beach is a cute little beach town with lots to see and do, but we spent a day here during our California road trip mainly to visit the dunes.

Where to Stay

This Airbnb was perfect for our night in Pismo Beach!  Located in Arroyo Grande, it was only 10 minutes away from the Pismo Beach Sand Dunes.  We loved the history behind it, and the hosts were excellent!

How to Get to the Dunes

There are several entrances to the dunes, however we found entering through the Pacific Dunes Ranch RV Resort to be the easiest.  After driving through what feels like the middle of nowhere, you’ll reach the RV resort.  When you arrive at the RV resort, you’ll see a little wooden fence near the entrance.  You can park in front of the fence and walk into the RV park.  Once you pass the office, continue walking through the park until you find the entrance to the dunes (it’s about a 5 minute walk).

Tips for Photography at the Pismo Beach Sand Dunes

-Shoot at sunrise or 30 minutes to an hour before sunset.  If you are shooting during the day, you might want a polarizing filter, as the sun’s reflection on the sand can be very bright.

-Walk a couple dunes in before shooting to avoid other visitors and lots of footprints in your photos.

-Don’t change your lens at the dunes.  It can get very windy here, blowing around lots of sand.

-Use a high quality tripod if you’re taking self-portraits, and sink it down into the sand a bit.
