How to Treat Blue Lagoon Hair

You can’t visit Iceland without experiencing the Blue Lagoon.  This relaxing geothermal spa was a highlight on our trip to Iceland and shouldn’t be missed!  Its milky blue water is rich in silica, algae, and minerals.  While the high silica content of the Blue Lagoon’s water might hydrate and benefit your skin, it can also negatively affect your hair, leaving it dry and stiff for days.  To treat Blue Lagoon hair, here are some steps to follow before and after getting in the Blue Lagoon.

When we visited the Blue Lagoon, I was determined NOT to get my hair wet.  For this reason, I ignored the #1 tip I had read over and over-put conditioner in your hair before getting into the Blue Lagoon.  It did end up getting wet, and for the remainder of our time in Iceland, my hair felt like straw.  It was dry, stiff, and hard to style.

Here are some ways I should have protected my hair before entering the Blue Lagoon and how I treated my Blue Lagoon hair to get it back to normal afterwards.

How to Protect Your Hair Before Entering the Blue Lagoon

Before entering the Blue Lagoon, soak and rinse your hair.  Once your hair is wet, apply a generous amount of conditioner and leave it in your hair while you are in the Blue Lagoon.  Even if you plan on having your hair up, I would recommend still doing this just in case.  You can bring your favorite conditioner with you, or the Blue Lagoon provides conditioner in the showers.

How does the Blue Lagoon affect your hair?

Due to the water’s high silica content, the Blue Lagoon can cause a buildup of minerals on your hair.  Geothermal water can leave hair feeling dry, brittle, and crunchy.

Does the Blue Lagoon really ruin or damage your hair?

The Blue Lagoon shouldn’t actually ruin or damage your hair.  Your hair should be back to normal after several washes and even sooner if treated properly.

How to Treat Your Hair After the Blue Lagoon

Even if you don’t follow the steps to prevent Blue Lagoon hair before getting in the water, following these steps to treat your hair after the Blue Lagoon should have your hair feeling back to normal in no time.

  1. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo.

Washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo can help remove mineral buildup from the geothermal water in the Blue Lagoon.  You might want to wash your hair two to three times, especially if your hair was submerged in the water.  While my hair got wet, it wasn’t ever submerged.  Washing my hair twice seemed to work well.

2. Use a hydrating hair mask.

Clarifying shampoos can sometimes leave your hair feeling stripped of all its moisture.  Paired with the effects of the Blue Lagoon, your hair is probably in need of some hydration.  Use a high quality hydrating hair mask or conditioning hair mask and let it sit on your hair for awhile.

3. Use a deep conditioner.

After using a hair mask, follow up with a deep conditioner.  Again, give your hair some time to really soak it in before rinsing.

Bonus Step:  Apply hair oil to the ends of your hair.

Once your hair is dry, apply your favorite hair oil to the ends of your hair.

Once I got home and followed these steps, my hair was completely back to normal!  Don’t forget to pack these 4 things- clarifying shampoo, a hydrating hair mask, deep conditioner, and hair oil-if you plan on visiting the Blue Lagoon, so you don’t have to deal with Blue Lagoon hair.

I hope this post was helpful in planning your visit to the Blue Lagoon in Iceland!
