How to Get There

We chose to fly into Reagan National Airport, however Dulles International Airport is conveniently located too.

How to Get Around

Because Washington D.C. is such a popular tourist destination and a major city, parking fees are high and free parking is very limited.  Many attractions are within walking distance and with Uber, D.C.’s Metro system, and the DC Circulator, renting a car isn’t a must.

Where to Stay

We stayed in this cute Airbnb (click here) which was only about a mile from the Capitol Building.  It was the perfect budget option for our quick trip.

Where to Eat

Ted’s Bulletin-phenomenal breakfast ( you have to get a Ted Tart!)

Eastern Market-a variety of food vendors ranging from crepes to fresh juice drinks

Eat Brgz-burgers reimagined

Café Georgetown-the cutest printed lattes and delicious bakery items

The National Mall

Contrary to what you would expect, the monuments of the National Mall are not located close together.  Between each monument is a bit of a walk.  However, for only $1 per person, per trip, you can ride the DC Circulator which stops at all major points of interest along the National Mall.  It runs from 7 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday, and 9 am to 8 pm on the weekends.  More information about bus times and route stops can be found at dccirculator.com.

The Lincoln Memorial

We started our first day with a visit to the Lincoln Memorial.  We arrived around 9 am and it was not crowded at all.  We were able to take a few pictures and enjoy the morning light on the Reflecting Pool.

The Jefferson Memorial

Located 1.9 miles from the Lincoln Memorial is the Jefferson Memorial.  You have the option of walking along Tidal Basin to get there which is so beautiful, especially in the fall and spring.

You will pass many other monuments along the National Mall that are worth a stop.

The Smithsonian Museums

The Smithsonian has 11 museums in Washington D.C., all of which are free to visit!  We really enjoyed the Museum of Natural History and spent hours walking through each exhibit.  Right across the street from the museum is the Smithsonian Institution Offices, otherwise known as the Smithsonian castle.  This beautiful building is a perfect photo opportunity and surrounds the Enid A. Haupt Gardens offering a quiet escape from the city.  Visit si.edu for hours and admission info.
