7 things we wish we knew when we started traveling 7 things we wish we knew when we started traveling…or things we should’ve known 😬

📱Your phone doesn’t magically work all over the world.

We’ll never forget the panic of picking up our rental car in Iceland, getting in the car to drive to our hotel and having no service. We had no idea what an eSIM was and ended up renting portable wi-fi from the rental company. Now we use @holafly for unlimited data on any international trip.

🌎International travel can be cheaper than domestic travel.

Why did we pay more to fly to Oregon than we paid to fly to Norway? While this isn’t always the case, oftentimes flights to international destinations, especially big cities like London, can be the same price or cheaper than domestic flights.

✈️Travel insurance is a must.

If you’re traveling internationally, travel insurance is a must.  While some policies cover delayed and cancelled flights, lost luggage  and delayed luggage, travel insurance policies can also cover emergency medical and dental care.

We went on many international trips without any kind of coverage and after a bad fall in England, we won’t ever travel without it again.

🗺️Driving routes should always be downloaded.

Or you might end up in another country…

💻Take an extra day off from work in case of flight delays or cancellations.

We don’t like wasting PTO, but we don’t like causing problems at work either. Reece got written up for missing work when our flight home was cancelled, and we couldn’t get back until the following day.

💳Use a travel rewards credit card for everyday purchases to earn points and miles.

We waited a few years to get our Capital One and Chase travel rewards cards and wish we would have applied for these cards sooner. Using these cards for everyday purchases like groceries and gas allows us to travel more often.

🏨Transfer points and miles to airlines and hotels to maximize value.

We hate to admit that this is something we just recently realized. We’re subscribed to Thrifty Traveler and have been learning more about points strategies.

While it is a small country, 5 days really isn’t enough to see and do everything.

But if you’re planning a shorter road trip, here are some can’t miss stops.

Vienna
•Belvedere Palace and Gardens
•Fenster Cafe
•St. Stephen’s Cathedral

Hallstatt
•Panoramic Viewpoint

We’re not saying you should go to Italy…but here’s We’re not saying you should go to Italy…but here’s an itinerary just in case.

💚❤️🤍

Two summers ago, we spent 10 days exploring Italy and loved every minute.

Here’s how we spent time in the Dolomites, Cinque Terre, Florence, and Rome.

📍The Dolomites

•Lago di Braies
Take in the view, walk around the lake, or rent a boat. Arrive early or stay at Hotel Lago di Braies to enjoy the lake without the crowds.

•Cadini di Misurina
Cadini di Misurina is one of the best hikes in the Dolomites. Head out early in the morning or later in the day to secure a parking spot. Be prepared to wait in line at the popular Instagram photo spot, or find your own photo spot.

•Seceda
Take a cable car from Ortisei to Furnes, then from Furnes to Seceda to view this stunning ridgeline.

•Alpe di Siusi
Don’t miss this gorgeous alpine meadow, but arrive before 9 am or after 5 pm as the road is closed to private vehicles during those hours.

📍Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a group of five colorful, seaside towns. We would recommend purchasing the Cinque Terre Treno MS card which allows unlimited train and bus travel and allows you to hike along the trails.

If you’re looking for the most affordable stay, choose Riomaggiore as your base.

•Take in a sunset along the rocks at Riomaggiore Beach.

•Have a beach day in Monterosso and stop by the villages of Vernazza, Corniglia, and Manarola.

•Before heading to Florence, hike part of the Blue Trail. Take the train to Monterosso, find the trailhead in old Monterosso, and hike to Vernazza. From here, you can continue hiking or take the train back.

📍Florence

•Stroll around the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, walk across the Ponte Vecchio, and listen to the street musicians play at Piazza della Repubblica.

•Accademia Gallery
Here you will find Michelangelo’s David sculpture along with other works from well known artists.

•Vivoli
You’ll probably have to wait in line for this Instagram famous affogato. We promise it’s worth it.

10 reasons to follow or unfollow us…your choice 🤍 10 reasons to follow or unfollow us…your choice 🤍

1. Airbnbs are better than hotels, you won’t convince us otherwise. The check out list is not that bad. 😂

2. We’ll tell you there’s no “right” way to travel.
Just because our idea of a good time isn’t a cruise or a week at Disney doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take that trip!

3. Our itineraries are always packed. We have to see and do everything, because what if we never go back to that destination?

4. Vacations are expensive, but trips don’t have to be.
Our last “vacation” together was our honeymoon. Traveling and vacationing are two different things.

5. We love to travel, but travel isn’t everything.
There’s so much more to life than crossing destinations off of your bucket list. 🤍

6. We’ll tell you to put everything on a credit card but don’t go into debt to travel (pay the balance off every month).
In the last 4 years, we’ve been able to travel because of points and miles. Travel doesn’t have to be expensive, you just have to be strategic.

7. We start talking about how excited we are to go home about halfway through a trip.
We love traveling, but we are homebodies. And we start to miss our cats.

8. We prioritize experiences over things.

9. We love adventure travel, but we love cities, art, and history too.
We can’t seem to niche down over here…

10. We visit multiple countries/states in one trip.
We’d love to slow travel one day, it’s just not for us right now.

If you’ve been following us for awhile, thank you. 🤍

If you’re new here, hi!

And if you’re choosing to unfollow us after this, ✌🏻.
